A stamp for a mine - 05/06/2001

Dear Friend,
How would you like to help demine Cambodia?
It costs you very little, if any. All you have to do is save us your used postage stamps, and send them to:
Rotary Club of Donvale, PO Box 31, Doncaster East, Victoria, Australia, 3109.
Rotary Club of Donvale has initiated a major project called, "Rotary Demining Cambodia" in collaboration with M.A.G. Cambodia which has cleared landmines in Cambodia for nearly ten years. The object is to raise funds for purchasing necessary equipment for landmine clearance. Rotary International District 9810 fully supports this project, and has directed one of its major fund raising efforts, "Used Stamps Collection", to help clear landmines in Cambodia in 2001/02. Further details are available on request.
Currently, every month on average, 100 Cambodians are becoming landmine victims. If you think this is 100 Cambodians too many, let us have your used stamps.
Would you please observe the following requests, so that we can all make the most out of your used stamps.
1. Used stamps are sold by weight. It is, therefore, imperative that stamps are torn from the corner of the envelop, including the front and rear. They sell for $4 per Kg on double paper, but only $2 on single paper.
2. A reasonable margin around the stamp is desirable, but not half of the envelop.
3. Non-Australian stamps are worth $20 per Kg, so are any Australian stamps worth over 45 cents. Please separate your stamps immediately after removing them from the envelops into "Foreign" or "High Value" bags to save us from sorting them out later on.
4. And pass this appeal onto your families, friends, and acquaintance. The likelihood is that they would like to help too.
According to Colonel Bill Van Ree of the Australian Army who worked as a mine clearing expert in Cambodia for a few years, every dollar invested in landmine clearance will return $17 in terms of economic benefits to the people. It is indeed an excellent investment by any standard.
Yes, the stamp collection costs you virtually nothing, but the benefit is far reaching. Make your used stamps count for Cambodia.
Your inquiries are most welcome.
Cheers
Ung Bun-Ang President Rotary Club of Donvale. District 9810
