The IF part of About has an interesting list of sites on Game Design. No mention of a magazine though. The Journal of Computer Game Design seems to be out of existence.
Supercade sounds like an interesting book. Also, playing with Mame and the C64/Apple ][ emulators might prove to be a better experience than just reading about it. The Links page seems good though.
