Another blog that might be added to your reading list, Gene Expression, which is a collaborative blog between a geneticist, a writer, a capitalist, a biochemist, an economist and a blender.
35mm é um diário fotográfico comunitário: A grosso modo, os membros publicam as suas fotos que são vistas/analisadas/comentadas pelos outros membros. Na prática deverá ser como uma conversa no café com os amigos que também tiram fotografias.
Public space and The Graffiti effect: given time, most open collaborative sites are overrun by garbage: pointless scribbling, overheated argument, vituperative name-calling, and other meaningless nonsense.
Who is Steven Hatfill? (via LeMonde)
FBI agents investigating last fall's anthrax attacks searched the Frederick, Maryland, apartment of Steven J. Hatfill, a former U.S. government bio-defense scientist, this past Tuesday. Hatfill is not a suspect in the anthrax case, the FBI says. Rather, law-enforcement officials have told The Associated Press that Hatfill consented to the search in order to clear his name, which The New York Times reports has been much mentioned on Web sites frequented by scientists, journalists, and others who've taken an interest in the anthrax investigation.
Sony and Michael Jackson buy Acuff-Rose: Gaylord Entertainment Co. is selling the legendary country music publisher Acuff-Rose (with a 55,000-song library) for $157 million cash to Sony/ATV (Pop superstar Michael Jackson and his partners at Sony Music Entertainment). Everyone Wants to Be a Venture Capitalist or how quick profits are the enemies of long-term research.
[Greg Blonder ex-AT&T Bell Labs researcher/manager and now VC with Morgenthaler Ventures] warns that a new innovation crisis is brewing. It flowered in the perverse economics of the dot-com era, when a flood of Internet capital tilted priorities away from long-term research toward get-rich-quick development. The result, Blonder says, is that for a decade we've been planting too little seed corn -- the basic scientific discoveries that can take 20 years or more to commercialize. And he sees new technological challenges from China and India.[...]

No more lifetime employment in Singapore
[Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng]urged workers to upgrade their skills through training and told them not to wait for the government and the unions to make the first move.
"The workers themselves should also take the lead and proactively identify their own retraining and upgrading needs," he said.

In Mexican villages, rape can be called a courting ritual
Mexico is struggling to modernize its justice system, but when it comes to punishing sexual violence against women, surprisingly little has changed in a century. In many parts of the country, the sentence for stealing a cow is harsher than for rape. Although the law calls for tough penalties for rape - up to 20 years in prison - only rarely is there an investigation into even the most barbaric of sexual violence. Women's groups estimate that perhaps 1 percent of rapes are ever punished. Although the two girls' medical charts say their pregnancies were the product of rape, no police authority has looked into the case.
I love HotDogs, really. Although it always surprise my US friends.
Any serious discussion of hot dogs must begin in Chicago. The Chicago dog is usually steamed, but this uninspired cooking method is amply counterbalanced by the wiener's accouterments, which include a poppy-seed bun and a veritable tossed salad of toppings: tomato wedges, pickle spears, disarmingly bright emerald relish, chopped onion, hot chilies (often endearingly called sport peppers) and celery salt.
Burger, a new blogging tool done with Ruby
For example, I'm thinking of letting the tool create its categories automatically, by examining keywords in posts, so that when a keyword is used more than N times a new category is created, with a Collector collecting all Entry objects that passes the KeywordCriterion.
