Primary Surfer - 02/03/2003

I just rewatched Pump up the Volume thanks to the wonderful technology called DVD. I like it.
Watts: We at the F.C.C. feel that democracy is about protecting the rights of the ordinary citizen. Un-regulated radio would result in programming of the lowest common denominator, the rule of the mob.
Boomtown is back on the air.
And, of course, because it's good, it's in trouble of disappearing off the primetime schedule due to middling ratings.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Storyteller
-What are you doing ?
- Entertaining... and... educating.
- Why can't you just masturbate like the rest of us ?
Reader, I've been sinning (in the rain, almost) again. Sin 3, thinking about writing on the web, being read and so on... I have _no_ aspiration of being a journalist. I have no time to be a journalist. I see myself more like a really subjective educator, hinting at worth-a-read webpages, shaping readers opinion but not too much, and always giving enough links. So they can discover the wonderful world of surfing, finding bits of information here and there, discovering new words, worlds, ideas and way of thinking: the World Wide Web.
It also shapes my relation to the number of hits: I'd rather have 2 readers (Google and I) and 50 ex readers now actively writing/compiling words of their own than 500 linking to me. That's why I like Pump Up the Volume (and the music is great, anyways). It doesn't make sense, does it ? watch the movie and let's talk about being a media.
I.T in the next years. I'm pretty sure you've noticed the "On the other hand, the French worship Jerry Lewis as the king of comedy, so we can't expect their actions to be entirely rational."
(via Mouche)
Matthew G. Kirschenbaum: Blag (via Jill/txt)
[His] colleague Bill Sherman informs [him] that blog is suspiciously close to "blag," British slang for "talking at length and with authority about something you don't know anything about." Hmm.
Daypop: Tim Bray with its Ongoing - What This Is
It seems to me that a necessary part of blog-ness is lots of links to other web discourse of the day. I'm not a good link transmitter because I don't do that much primary surfing. I track the web through other people's blogs and in particular their newsfeeds, and in particular through NetNewswire.
Read also his Biz and Truth views.
Later: Anomalies
I'm not going to invest the time in running the numbers properly, but a couple of glaring anomalies emerge:
  • Macintoshes are over-represented; about 18% of all browser requests. Particularly in the early hours, before the word really got out, the proportion of Macs was very high.
  • Internet Explorer is under-represented: 22% of Windows requests came from non-IE browsers, mostly Mozilla with a bit of Netscape and Opera.
I guess this says something about the kinds of people who watch RSS feeds and check out the new weblogs.
Comment nier le choc Islam-Occident ? (via Emmanuel)
