Originally there was no weblog spam and yet conversation and discussion still existed. If an individual posted something and another individual wanted to respond to it, they simply wrote a post on their own site linking to the original. This environment was entirely free of spam. It was completely clean. I can't help thinking that maybe we need to start thinking in terms of approaches like that - where there is no automated functionality that could be robotically exploited. Or perhaps we should be looking in other directions - how can we abstract out the kind of social networks that lie behind Flickr to structures that we could overlay across the internet as a whole.and in the comments
Before blogs, there were mailing lists. And I miss the sense of community, focus and closeness they had. The ability to self publish in blogs is wonderful, but in the process we've spread the conversations in mailing lists all over the web without really providing the tools to bring it all back together in one place.
Interaction for humans is problematic, especially with groups. If there's too much interaction or the wrong kind, groups end up being less intelligent. The more we talk to each other the dumber it's possible for us to become.
Human being herd: "Better to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally."
Human beings imitate "If a lot of people think that something is valuable, then it must be valuable -- a generally reasonable assumption."
His solutions: be loosely tied, be exposed to many diverse sources of information. Inject randomness into the system, see evolution's law of necessary variation.
Two ways to get to independence from the ideas of those around:

They're spending $3M a year on free software. Why? Because if it goes down, they can chain their staff to their desks until it is fixed. Their words, not mine. Because they can't buy an adequate support service guarantee from their existing vendor or from the vendor who has the productized version to meet this critical support need.(via Doc Searls' IT Garage)
The revamped site will also be more text-based, because, Depke said, focus groups seem to confuse editorial graphics with advertisements. "Conducting our research, we've found that art--unless it's an important part of telling the story--is distracting to users," said Depke. The site will also favor lighter tones and simpler layouts, which focus groups prefer, she added.HACKERS HEART PLAIN TEXT
