Bytes for All: Computing and Internet for the Majority of the World

[Bytes for All is] a creative platform of 16 volunteers across South Asia and numerous supporters and readers to work for IT for Social Changes issues. It grows & develops in rather unpredictable fashion but accommodates expert opinions and contributions of different people, which many other organizations with far greater resources and funding have failed to achieve.

Bridges.org is an international non-profit organisation that promotes the effective use of ICT in the developing world to reduce poverty and improve people's lives. On their website, they also offer FOSS policy in Africa: A toolkit for policy-makers and practicioners.

Timbuktu Chronicles offers a view of Africa and Africans with a focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, technology, practical remedies and other self sustaining activities.

Robots and emotion

In [Maja Mataric, a computer science professor at the University of Southern California,]'s work on robots designed to help people who are convalescing, she tries to squelch any notion that the machine is like a human. If anything, a robot should be more like a pet. "Pets don't understand you perfectly," she said, "they're in a world of their own." Yet they can help.
"It's really important not to try to make the thing believable," she added. "This is a machine. But it's your machine. What we want is a relationship."
