Fue Penal - 10 juillet 2006

A funny tip on the WikiHow to watch a soccer game on TV in the USA spanish channel

Watch the games on a Latin channel or foreign station – the announcers are better, you might not understand a word but it won’t matter – you’ll know when something exciting is happening.

One good thing for sure about watching the World Cup on Univision are the ads in spanish. 90% of them are soccer oriented. And they are funny.

My favorite is the one from T-Mobile, where two cousins argue if there was a penalty or not, through SMS/Text messaging. Of course, the ad is nowhere to be found on the T-Mobile website...

But it's on YouTube because it's a nice one: Spanish tv T-Mobile spot from Word Cup 2006: ¡No fue penal!.

The ones with Eric Cantona and Nike for JogaTV are nice too: Joga TV

It was a wonderful headbutt. And the flash game that goes with it. The sound effect are bad though...
et un
et deux
et trois coups de tête
would seem to be more appropriate.

Another concern is that governments will cut spending if they believe that philanthropies are taking care of a problem. A study done last year by the London School of Economics and the Wellcome Trust said that so-called public-private partnerships — a recent phenomenon governments, charities and companies uniting to develop drugs for neglected diseases — were being financed mainly by philanthropies.
"We are in a current climate where the government is saying 'Let philanthropy do it,' " said Sara Engelhardt, president of the Foundation Center, a research organization.

More art: Anya Gallaccio's Conceptual Project Yields Zinfandel

Her current project, under way in Sonoma County in California, adroitly combines her love of process with an actual physical object. "After the Gold Rush," a collaboration with the winemaker Zelma Long, will culminate sometime next summer in 400 half-cases of six different types of zinfandel.
Early on, Ms. Gallaccio set her heart on making zinfandel, a California wine that is known — rather like Abstract Expressionism — for having no obvious European antecedents. Part of its appeal was that "there's this suspicion around the wine," she said. "People either love it or hate it."
And technically, it can be quite challenging to make, largely because the grapes don't ripen evenly on the vine, "which to me was really exciting," she said.

Wikipedia adds After years of intense debate, DNA tests, at University of California, Davis have proved that Primitivo, a Southern Italian variety of red wine grape, is identical to the renowned Californian grape Zinfandel. And in fact both come from Croatia where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski

Oh well, one less for the journalistic fact-checking process, I guess.

Mark

Scoble once again pulls out this tired yarn: “Users don’t care about specs, or arguments about formats.”
My standard answer to that is, “Yes, but they should. And that’s why we developers have to care about them on our users’ behalf.”

And Mark is writing again on his own site too: this time we even get videos DiM video edition: You make bunny cry, with the roomba stool torture (SPOILER for the roomba lovers: it gets out).

Roomba, the vacuum cleaner for geeks: Roomba Bluetooth Interface, Serial Interface and Line following Roomba mod. I'm sure it vacuums too.

So I was trying to compile Sugar and my PC keeps rebooting. So I Memtest86-ed it and for sure the RAM was bad.

So I went on the Kingston website, got a RMA, they sent me a new one and then I sent back the bad one. 3 days. New Ram. PC working again.

Lesson 1: want to test your PC ? compile Mozilla
Lesson 2: Kingston return policy is really nice (note though that the lifetime warranty ends when they don't produce the model anymore)

Oh, and in case you care, my compilation of Sugar failed at the end.

China launched a Web site, Linese, which offers free Chinese lessons and materials to promote the study and use of the language abroad. The site includes audio-visual presentations, interactive exercises and advice for teachers of Mandarin Chinese, with photographs and descriptions of cultural icons such as the Great Wall, kung fu actor Jackie Chan and basketball star Yao Ming.

And it's slow.

The Grim Neurology of Teenage Drinking

"There is no doubt about it now: there are long-term cognitive consequences to excessive drinking of alcohol in adolescence," said Aaron White, an assistant research professor in the psychiatry department at Duke University and the co-author of a recent study of extreme drinking on college campuses.
"We definitely didn't know 5 or 10 years ago that alcohol affected the teen brain differently," said Dr. White, who has also been involved in research at Duke on alcohol in adolescent rats. "Now there's a sense of urgency. It's the same place we were in when everyone realized what a bad thing it was for pregnant women to drink alcohol."
One of two brain areas known to be affected is the hippocampus, a structure crucial for learning and memory.

New Medicine for AIDS Is One Pill, Once a Day

The new drug is a combination of drugs already on the market — Sustiva, sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Truvada, sold by Gilead Sciences. Truvada is a combination of two Gilead drugs, Viread and Emtriva.[...]
The companies have not revealed the new drug's name or its price, though they have suggested it will cost roughly the same as Sustiva and Truvada bought separately, which is about $1,200 a month.

and New AIDS Pill to Treat People in Poor Countries

The new pill, made by Aurobindo Pharma of Hyderabad, India, combines three common first-line drugs, AZT, 3TC and NVP, which are also known as zidovudine, lamivudine and nevirapine and sold in the United States as Retrovir, Epivir and Viramune.
Dr. Dybul said he was also pleased that the new pill did not contain D4T, also known as stavudine and Zerit, which is another common first-line drug, but somewhat more toxic than the others.
In poor countries, where it is harder to do frequent blood and liver tests, toxicity can be harder to control.

At Colleges, Women Are Leaving Men in the Dust

"I hate to be cynical, but when it was a problem of black or poor kids, nobody cared, but now that it's a problem of white sons of college-educated parents, it's moving very rapidly to the forefront," Dr. [Judith Kleinfeld, a University of Alaska professor who has created the Boys Project (boysproject.net), a coalition of researchers, educators and parents to address boys' troubles.] said. "At most colleges, there is a sense that a lot of boys are missing in action."

When questioned about how frequently they used a range of tools and resources for design and analysis:
  • 52% indicated that they use “hand calculations (calculators) and paper” daily, with an additional 21% citing it as a weekly practice;
  • 47% of respondents indicated that the next most common resources used daily are “electronic references and tables (e.g. CD-ROM, Web),”)” with another 26% using them weekly;
  • 35% indicated that they use “print reference books and tables” daily, with another 31% using them weekly; and
  • 39% indicated daily use of spreadsheets, which remain the most common software tool used in analysis and design. Another 31% of users employ them weekly.

Members of Cornell University's Global Positioning System Laboratory have cracked the so-called pseudo random number (PRN) codes of Europe's first global navigation satellite, despite efforts to keep the codes secret.

Afraid that cracking the code might have been copyright infringement, Psiaki's group consulted with Cornell's university counsel. "We were told that cracking the encryption of creative content, like music or a movie, is illegal, but the encryption used by a navigation signal is fair game," said Psiaki. The upshot: The Europeans cannot copyright basic data about the physical world, even if the data are coming from a satellite that they built.
